I felt so much better after I picked out a few basic items that would tide me over until I could squeeze back into my old clothes. It helped me accept that “This is what my reality is right now, and that’s okay.”

CHAPTER 13

Can I Airbrush My Actual Body?

(Skin and Hair Changes)

OH, MAN, and I thought the shape of my body was a trip? I haven’t even gotten into the surface of it. We are talking acne, darkened nipples, stretch marks galore, clumps of hair clogging the shower drain every morning, and all sorts of other not at all attractive transformations that I did not see coming. My skin was stretched out all over my abdomen, and the skin of my face was all dry and flakey. When I complained to my dermatologist about this last condition, she simply shrugged and said, “What can I tell you? The absolute worse thing a woman can do to her skin is have a baby.” Needless to say, I stopped seeing that dermatologist immediately!

I do want to run through the various changes that your skin and hair undergo after pregnancy. Like many of these changes, some go back to normal fairly soon; others you just have to see as the price of having given birth to such a precious little baby.
